TLC to air reality series on American Muslim families

Former CBS anchor Katie Couric, who said last year that the United States needs “a Muslim version of ‘The Cosby Show,’” can breathe a sigh of relief. TLC announced Thursday that it’s working on a reality television program about American Muslim families.

“All American Muslim,” which will debut this fall, tells the stories of five Muslim families who live in or near Dearborn, Michigan. The show aims to expose “very distinct lives that often times challenge the Muslim stereotype,” said TLC’s general manager Amy Winter in a press release, adding that the series is also about “inviting viewers into a world they might not otherwise experience.”

According to CNN, the show will follow two close sisters, one of whom wears a traditional Islamic headscarf and the other who has tattoos and piercings and has just tied the knot with an Irish Catholic lad who is converting to Islam.

“Through these families and their diverse experiences, we will explore how they blend their values and traditions with everyday life in America,” Winter said in the Thursday release.

Towards the end of 2010, Couric expressed concern about bigotry towards Muslims and said Americans should be able to watch a Muslim version of “The Cosby Show” to combat stereotypes about Islam. (Katie Couric: ‘Maybe we need a Muslim version of “The Cosby Show”)

“The bigotry expressed against Muslims in this country has been one of the most disturbing stories to surface,” Couric said on her CBSNews.com Web show.

They won’t show committed “Mooslims” who go mad in Mecca (throwing rocks at the Devil-Pillar),
but shall display slim, stylish, sable Sirens careening in Corvairs, perhaps Beverly Hackalackas.

I totally hate the fact that we can’t unsubscribe to indevidual channels it really sucks at times like this.

I guess I have no other choice than to do what I have did to all the other foolish liberal, race baiting, white man hating channels like MTV,BET,HBO,Oxygen,OWN,CNN,CBS.ABC,MSNBC………..(CHANNEL BLOCK). Besides after about a week ya forget that the channel ever exist.

Sorry to disagree with you Katie, but I think one of the most ‘disturbing stories to surface’ is the fact that Americans of all types actually do get along very well on a day to day basis. Couric and her ilk use a very few high profile cases to draw broad conclusions which are factually incorrect.

Isn’t stereotyping something we all learned how to identify and reject as kids? Hmm.

America is a nation of immigrants. We all came here from somewhere. The success of American muslims and their integration into our society is a great success story. This comes against a background of which it would be all to easy to hate them and yet the vast majority of us do not. We recognize that the terrorists and terrorism are the work of disturbed individuals. Granted it might be their religion that ‘compels’ them to do so, but also there are many millions who do not take that course of action.

European muslims arrived to fill the lowest economic niche – general labor. Turks and Moroccans many of them. Americans muslims differ in that they are generally highly educated and fill a far different economic niche. They are not disaffected in the way that those with fewer economic prospects often are.

Except for a few on the fringe my experience has been that Americans are a very tolerant people. Even in the face of constant terrorist attacks.

How about a series on Norwegian Christian conservatives?

Shhh! We can’t use either C word or have a show about those racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, sexist bigots now can we? Liberal writers wouldn’t be able to stand to give them even one positive trait or storyline and could never get “into” or “relate to” the characters. They would all be stereotypes just as they are in their little, bigoted liberal minds.
