Fans of the Fox program “Arrested Development” will soon have new material to celebrate, as a film based on the sitcom will hit the big screen in 2012.

Comedian Will Arnett, who starred in the series about the formerly rich, dysfunctional Bluth family, said on a recent Marc Maron “WTF” podcast that “Arrested Development” will hit cinemas next year.

“We are gonna make the ‘Arrested Development’ movie,” Arnett said. “And [creator] Mitch Hurwitz, who is really just a brilliant, brilliant guy, is in the process right now of concocting something that’s really kind of unexpected, I think, that I really don’t want to give away, but I think the fans are going to be really satisfied.”

Earlier this year, “Arrested Development” actor Jeffrey Tambor also said the sitcom had inspired a flick.

“[I]t’s all going straight, everyone’s on board, I know they’re writing, and maybe this time next year we’ll be having this conversation,” Tambor said.

“Arrested Development,” which had an impressive cast, received widespread critical acclaim and enjoyed high DVD sales figures but failed to soar in TV ratings. The show follows actor Jason Bateman’s widowed character Michael Bluth as he tries to normalize his unusual family members. Bluth’s son George Michael, played by awkward duck Michael Cera, strives for decency and integrity yet repeatedly gets into bad situations. Arnett plays Michael’s brother Gob, a Segway-riding failed magician. Michael’s twin sister, portrayed by Portia de Rossi, is a shallow, self-involved princess who has only fleeting interests in social issues.
