One of presidential candidate Michele Bachmann’s major political opponents is defending her against what it says is blatant sexism on the part of Newsweek magazine.

Monday, the National Organization for Women (NOW) spoke out against Newsweek’s most recent cover, which features an extreme close-up of Michele Bachmann and the title “The Queen of Rage.”

“It’s sexist,” NOW president Terry O’Neill told TheDC. “Casting her in that expression and then adding ‘The Queen of Rage’ I think [it is]. Gloria Steinem has a very simple test: If this were done to a man or would it ever be done to a man – has it ever been done to a man? Surely this has never been done to a man.”

While some have pointed out that Newsweek has used unflattering photos of men such as Rush Limbaugh and John McCain on its cover, O’Neill says that is not the issue.

“Who has ever called a man ‘The King of Rage?’ Basically what Newsweek magazine – and this is important, what Newsweek magazine, not a blog, Newsweek magazine – what they are saying of a woman who is a serious contender for President of the United States of America…They are basically casting her as a nut job,” O’Neill said. “The ‘Queen of Rage’ is something you apply to wrestlers or somebody who is crazy. They didn’t even do this to Howard Dean when he had his famous scream.”

NOW is diametrically opposed to Bachmann on practically every political issue. Bachmann is pro-life, NOW is pro-choice. Bachmann wants to make significant cuts to entitlements, while NOW it pushing to protect Social Security and Medicare. The list is practically infinite. Nevertheless, NOW is rallying to her side for all women in politics.

“The main reason why we would stand up for Michele Bachmann and defend her against these kind of misogynistic attacks is we want women to run for office. Of course my job is to defeat Michele Bachmann and I intend to do so. But good women will not run for office if Newsweek magazine can do this to such a prominent politician and get away with it.”

Caroline’s right. Newsweek runs biased covers against men too. Just ask McCain and Gingrich. Bachmann and now can quit complaining.

I just sent the following letter to NOW:
I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with and vociferous disagreement with statements made by the president of NOW in regards to Newsweek photos and article on Michelle Bachman, to the extent that ‘this would never have been done to a man’ this is ‘extremely sexist’ and that ‘they are trying to make her look like a nut.’  In the first place, this kind of thing IS and HAS been done to men all the time. Men like Barack Obama who is called a Nazi, Socialist, Communist and Fascist by the same people in the same articles or speeches, who don’t even acknowledge that those terms are both contradictory to each other and blatantly incorrect. Men like Howard Dean who was excroriated over a sound. One sound! One action, one time, after a lifetime of service! Men like Anthony Weiner, who Never campaigned on ‘family values’ and Never hypocritically held up his marriage as more valuable than others or his religion or values as superior to others, who did Nothing illegal and nothing that had anything to do with his office. Similar things have also been said about Rick Perry, similar things which in Perry’s case are equally TRUE.
Have you not honestly bothered to look at any of the many, many images of Bachman which have been in the press for years? Did you not see ‘the speech’ on TV? That is what the woman looks like. She Looks Crazy. She looks like this in a bare minimum of fifty percent of all images of her. If this is sexist, then I am very, very sorry that I have referred to myself for years, in the face of all opposition, as a radical feminist. It is never sexist to portray someone exactly how they look and act.
As for ‘the Queen of Rage’ comment, once again, this is not the least bit sexist. She makes rage a centerpoint to her campaign statements, speeches, and strategy. She claims that if elected she will immediately lock the doors to the EPA which is so evil as to protect all women in the US from polution and help us to have clean water and air. She says that Obama is a fascist for having the Stimulus package. She says that health care legislation will have death panels to decide who lives or dies. If this is not rage, I do not know the meaning of the English language.
Finally, on the question of whether they are trying to make her ‘look like a nut’ and that this is ‘not done to a man.’ Once again, you are completely wrong on both counts. First of all, if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…. The woman is a nut. Let there be no bones about it. This is a woman who is trying to make Christian fundamentalist theocracy the law of the land. This is a woman who claims that she lives by the Bible credo of ‘wives, be submissive to your husbands’ and yet we are supposed to believe that she both does that, and would be the only one running the show if in the White House. This woman has said more nutty things, than any current sitting politician with a major following, with the possible exception of Ron Paul. No one else says that she is nutty? Read this: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/michele-bachmanns-holy-war-20110622?page=3As for no one else treats men like this, that too is false. Google ‘craziest things Ron Paul believes” there are some lovely articles out there making him out to be a nut. Of course, just like with Bachman, they are all too true. Or read this, about what a nut Rick Perry is, again, all too true: http://www.texasobserver.org/cover-story/rick-perrys-army-of-god. Or how about, if you think a man is never treated this way, that you “Google Santorum.” Again, this campaign was based on vile and nutty things Santorum said and believes, such as ‘We cannot let people behave any way they want to just because they want to’ (about being homosexual and engagine in consensual adult homosexual sex, and that being LEGAL).

I have never, ever, written anythign negative to, or about NOW. I have donated several times to NOW campaigns. I was just so shocked to come across these remarks by the president of NOW and so appalled, that I had to write. Those remarks are not only completely incorrect, but they are deeply foolish. In the first place, if we are going to be on a level playing field, then we have to be on a level playing field!!! We can’t say that women are just as strong and capable as anyone else, and then go crying to mommy every time anyone says anything mean about a woman, just because she is a woman. How ridiculous! In the second place, if you think you are going to get the least bit of credit from Michelle Bachman, or the radical right on this issue, you are as nutty as she is. These people are not on the side of women, even the ones who ARE women are not on the side of women. And giving in to their whiney ploys, just like when Sarah Palin tried to claim every single insult and negative remark about her was sexist (newsflash, she truly is an idiot and relatively incompetent, that’s not sexist to posit), only strengthens them and their women-hating agenda. I am very dissapointed in NOW, right now.

From Clinton to Palin, is NOW fearful they are irrelevant after all these decades, having put their politics ahead of their supposed mandate?

    This is weird.
