President Barack Obama’s re-election team used the GOP candidate debate to stir up its base and solicit donations Thursday night.

“You probably weren’t planning to watch Fox News tonight,” read an email from Obama’s campaign manager, Jim Messina. “But right now, the Republicans are holding their first Iowa debate. I’m tuning in — and you should, too.” (RELATED: DNC aims at Romney, Perry)

“What we’re seeing unfold on their side is a race to the right, where it’s becoming difficult to distinguish the candidates from each other — and from the Tea Party Republicans in Congress,” declared the brief email, which provided a link to watch the debate via the Obama campaign website. “This whole group is way out of the mainstream.”

The email message also included a solicitation for political donations.

The same theme was echoed by other Democrats, including Brad Woodhouse, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee.

“There is only 1 take away from this debate. Every GOP candidate pledge their oath to the mother ship — the Tea Party,” Woodhouse tweeted.
