Irene flight cancellations top 2,400

U.S. flight cancellations surpassed 2,400 as Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) and American Airlines joined JetBlue Airways Corp. (JBLU) in grounding planes ahead of Hurricane Irene’s East Coast landfall.

Delta is scrubbing 1,300 flights from tomorrow through Aug. 29, including its entire New York City-area schedule on Aug. 28, said Anthony Black, a spokesman. JetBlue, the first major carrier to drop weekend flights, will scrap 75 percent of its Aug. 28 trips among 882 cancellations through Aug. 29.

Irene is forecast to plow through the busiest airspace in the U.S., threatening operations at carriers including United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL) and Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) Seven major airports are on the storm’s projected path over Washington, Philadelphia, New York and Boston.
