Experts say half of U.S. population to be obese by 2030

About half of both men and women in the U.S. will be obese by 2030 if current trends continue, health experts warned today.

Obesity is fast replacing tobacco as the single most important preventable cause of chronic non-communicable diseases, and will add an extra 7.8million cases of diabetes, 6.8 million cases of heart disease and stroke, and 539,000 cases of cancer in the U.S. within the next two decades.

Some 32 percent of men and 35 percent of women are now obese in the U.S., according to a research team led by Claire Wang at the Mailman School of Public Health in Columbia University in New York.

The key phrase is “if current trends continue”. People extrapolating infinitely from short term trends is the source of endless error. If the temperature rises half a degree from one year to the next and you extrapolate that linearly for a millenium, soon the temperature will be 500 degrees hotter and metals will melt. I remember in the 1970s when the followers of a Guru Marahargee bragged about their recruitment rates and projected that by 1985 every person on earth would be a follower. The reality is that trends continue until they stop, life is far more cyclical than linear. These meaningless projections are used by charlatans to panic the unwitting to support the hoax of the week whether global warming or government control of the diet or running out of metals or anything else.
