U.S. stocks open with sell-off

Stocks plunged at the open Thursday after a gloomy outlook from the Federal Reserve and weak manufacturing reports from Europe and China raised further concerns the global economy could sink back into recession.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled sharply, led by United Tech and Alcoa after finishing lower in the previous session.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also plunged. The CBOE Volatility Index, widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, soared near 41.
