Former New York Governor George Pataki says he wants New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to run for president.

“America is in a crisis, and none of the current candidates or the President has leveled with the American public about what needs to be done to rescue our future,” Pataki, who flirted with his own presidential campaign earlier this year, wrote in a statement. “This country needs a straight shooter and a proven leader. I urge Governor Chris Christie to run for President to fill the void and lead America forward.”

The statement came on the heels of a New York Post report that Nancy Reagan, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former President George W. Bush are all urging Christie to run.

“It’s more than just flattering,” an anonymous “source” told the Post, who added that the Republican luminaries are convinced Christie could win and be a good president. Christie’s wife Mary Pat also now backs the idea, the paper reports, following a call from former first lady Barbara Bush.
