ARLINGTON, Va. — Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Friday that MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell was being “absurd” for suggesting Cain didn’t do enough to support the civil rights movement as a young man.

Responding to a question during a book signing at a store in Arlington, Cain said O’Donnell’s questions on the subject during his show Thursday night were “irrelevant.” During the interview, Cain told O’Donnell he was too young to participate.

Cain said O’Donnell was “trying to play gotcha” so he could “twist something that you said and make some gross assumptions.”

“His attempt to do that failed, in my opinion,” Cain said.

“I mean for Lawrence O’Donnell to try to challenge me on what was I doing during the civil rights movement, that’s about as ridiculous as me asking him, ‘What were you doing when you were in kindergarten?’” Cain said. “The two don’t even relate to one another.”
