Various women step forward charging a presidential contender with sexual harassment. Sound familiar? CNN contributor James Carville had to deal with such a situation in the early 1990s with his candidate, Bill Clinton.

Today the allegations are against GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain, who at a press conference Tuesday alleged the “Democratic machine” was behind the charges. But on CNN’s “Situation Room” shortly after that press conference, Carville dismissed that theory, saying Democrats want Cain to win the Republican nomination.

“No Democrat doesn’t want Herman Cain to be the Republican nominee,” Carville said. “That doesn’t take any sense to figure out. It also takes no sense to figure out he’s not going to be the Republican nominee. He was not going to be it before that.”

“There was no left-wing conspiracy at all, [it would] be stupid to have one,” he said.

Carville also described the allegations against Cain as significantly different than those made against Clinton.

“The idea that somehow this is analogous barely, barely holds up,” Carville said. “[Clinton] did survive the Gennifer Flowers allegations because people thought he had an underlying skill and there was always a good chance he was going to be the nominee and Cain has none.”

“Donna [Brazile] is right,” he said. “We’re all pulling for ol’ Herman. We want him to win. We’re not trying to undermine him.”
