Rick Perry’s new TV ad is drawing criticism from GOProud, a gay conservative group.
In the ad, Perry says, “… you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.”
GOProud’s Chairman, Christopher Barron, emailed me this response:
The ad is beyond anti-gay, its anti-American. Rick Perry put this ad out the same day he stood in front of the Republican Jewish Coalition and said that “Israel shares our values” – the same Israel that has allowed openly gay service for 30 years now. America has a lot of problems – out of control spending, a federal government that is getting bigger and more intrusive everyday, debt that leaves us teetering on the brink of fiscal ruin, taxes and regulations that are crushing small business, etc. If Governor Perry honestly believes that one of the “problems” facing our country today are the brave gay and lesbian women serving in our military who put our life on the line every single day for our freedoms, than he lacks the moral authority to be President.
This ad plays to the cheap seats, appeals to the absolute worst in people and is exactly what one would expect out of a desperate campaign entering its political end days.
