Texas Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison told The Daily Caller in an exclusive interview that GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has “shown a lot of creativity” and is “certainly credible.”

She called his opponent Mitt Romney “excellent” with “a steady hand at the wheel,” saying Republican voters should give him “some leeway” on changing certain positions he held as the governor of Massachusetts.

“I think that Newt has some very good features. I’m really pleased that we have had these debates. I think Mitt Romney has been excellent. He’s been a steady hand at the wheel. I think Newt has shown a lot of creativity, that’s what he’s known for and I think that he is certainly credible. I think he’s done some good things, I do,” she told TheDC on Capitol Hill.

“I think that Mitt has really done a lot that’s right for a long time. He’s not the new kid on the block. He’s not somebody who is going to be a fad. We know him and his wife and his family and his views and I think that people are being a little tough on him. Having become governor of Massachusetts was a huge success story for a Republican. It was amazing that he would have the appeal to do that and I think we should applaud that. I don’t think we should be saying, ‘oh, you’re changing positions.’ Of course he was running for an office in a state that clearly is a Democratic stronghold and if his positions were different for that state, I think we should give him some leeway there and I think that’s been a little rough really on him.”
