With former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney set to make a long-awaited appearance on Fox News Sunday next week, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough and Fox host Chris Wallace have begun to trade barbs.

On his Thursday show, Scarborough — who at the time mistakenly thought it was set for this Sunday — offered some advice for Romney, alleging that his interviewer, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, “loathes” him.

“And by the way, he’s going on Fox News Sunday,” Scarborough said. “Chris Wallace has never made a secret of the fact that he loathes Mitt Romney. He has never liked him. Anybody that knows Chris Wallace at Fox has said the same thing. Chris Wallace, of course, will deny it and throw an insult around because that’s what he’s done in the past. But the fact that Romney is going into territory where he’s not liked this weekend, I think, … suggests that he understands he’s going to have to … throw some punches.”

On Sunday’s “Fox & Friends,” Wallace replied: “You know … some people say — and I will take this advice … don’t punch down,” Wallace replied. “Don’t respond to folks that are silly and aren’t worthy of a response. It isn’t true. I suspect he knows it isn’t true. I think he’s trying to get into Fox with a network that gets higher ratings than he does. I’ll leave it at that.”
