The Daily Caller has extended interview offers to each of the major Republican presidential candidates. Rick Santorum was among the first to respond. He came to Washington recently to talk about his ideas and campaign. Santorum, a two-term United States senator from Pennsylvania, is a lifelong conservative and the father of seven children. He sat down with The Daily Caller’s Ginni Thomas.

What is it about President Obama that has pulled you to run for president yourself?

“Go and look what President Obama thinks about America’s past. Does he think America is a shining city on the hill? … Does he believe in America, in free markets and free people, that people pursuing God’s will in their life has led to a great and just society? No, he sees America how Saul Alinsky sees America, as corrupt, that capitalism doesn’t work.”

Make a moral case for a limited federal government

“I was the author of the welfare reform bill. I believe in compassion, but government is not compassionate, can’t be compassionate. Compassion requires ‘feeling with,’ and that’s not what government does.”

What is your bold plan to limit the ever-expanding federal government?

“I’ve put forth a plan that talks about trimming $5 trillion in five years, and that’s a big and a bold plan. A lot of entitlement reform, a lot of reductions in domestic spending programs, a lot of improvements in efficiency.”

How would a President Santorum handle an unexpected crisis in America?

“I’m someone who’s gone out there and fought the tough battles. … A lot of people have good ideas. The question is do you have the courage to fight for those ideas.”

Is President Obama undermining American stature in the world?

“We shouldn’t be going around apologizing for America, packing up and coming home and saying that the world doesn’t need America. The world without America is a very dangerous place and a very broken place. We have a role to play.”
