Amazon’s not the only company that flirted with the idea of buying RIM.
Microsoft and Nokia also talked about a joint bid, according to the Wall Street Journal.
But it sounds like the talks were just that — talk. No bid was made, and the report admits it’s “unclear how extensively RIM has been involved in any takeover discussions with Microsoft and Nokia.”
It’s hard to imagine why Microsoft and Nokia would want to saddle themselves with a dying company with completely incompatible software and outdated hardware.
Nokia has already bet its future on Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, and Microsoft wouldn’t get much help from RIM — its biggest strength is in the enterprise, where Microsoft is already dominant.
But RIM’s market cap dropped below the value of its assets earlier this year, so it makes sense that the rival phone makers would at least put RIM on their list of companies to consider.
