One week ahead of the caucuses, Texas Gov. Rick Perry is buying airtime in Iowa to pump some much needed excitement into his campaign by promoting the idea that being a member of Congress should be a part-time gig.

“Cut their pay in half, cut their time in Washington in half, cut their staff in half, send them home,” the Republican presidential candidate says in the ad. “Let them get a job like everybody else back home has.”

In a release, Perry’s campaign said the 30-second television advertisement will air on Iowa broadcast and cable.

Taking aim at his rivals who have served in Congress, Perry says in the ad that, “If Washington’s the problem, why trust a congressman to fix it?”

“Among them, they’ve spent 63 years in Congress, leaving us with debt, earmarks and bailouts,” he said. “Congressmen get $174,000 a year and you get the bill.”
