Michele Bachmann’s Iowa campaign chairman suddenly threw his support behind Ron Paul at a rally Wednesday night, according to multiple reports.

Kent Sorenson, an Iowa state senator, walked onto the stage at a Paul event and told an adoring crowd that he was throwing his weight behind the candidate who supported him during his own senate race.

“I believe we’re at a turning point in this campaign,” Sorenson told the crowd, Politico reports. “We’re going to take Ron Paul all the way to the White House.”

Sorenson said in a statement that Paul is the most conservative top-tier candidate.

“The fact is, there is a clear top tier in the race for the Republican nomination for President, both here in Iowa and nationally. Ron Paul is easily the most conservative of this group,” he wrote.

He called the decision to switch his support “one of the most difficult I have made in my life.”

“But given what’s at stake for our country, I have decided I must take this action,” he said.
