Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said Thursday that he expects to face a recall election sometime in June.

“I don’t plan on losing, but I’m not afraid of losing,” Walker said at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI).

Walker opponents, mostly union leaders, said in October that they could collect as many as 1 million signatures on a recall petition. So far, however, the number has just topped 600,000. Still, that’s more than the 540,208 valid signatures required to initiate a recall.

The governor said that he expects his rival candidate to be “someone handpicked by the unions. They’ll want someone who will go back to what we had in the past … They’ll have record job losses like we had in the past, massive deficits, and double-digit tax increases which we saw just a few years ago.”

The AEI event occurred at roughly the same hour as three former Walker aides were charged with felonies in Wisconsin. The charges are related to the disappearance of more than $11,000 from the account of a charity established to provide help to the families of Wisconsin soldiers killed or wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq.
