The president is expected to attend the event with about 40 donors.

The controversial filmmaker, known for “Malcolm X” and “Do the Right Thing,” was a passionate Obama backer in 2008, but criticized the president’s reaction to the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

“I don’t know why Obama ever trusted these BP guys! They would lie to their mothers,” Lee told GQ magazine in 2010. “[Former BP president Tony] Hayward does not give a fuck. The thing we don’t talk about is that 11 Americans lost their lives and it took seven weeks to invite their families to the White House. I’m not trying to bash my man, but that’s a long time.”
