They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach — and for Chris Christie, that mantra rings true.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey at the Republican governor’s Mendham, New Jersey home, Christie told the talk show host about how he fell for his wife, Mary Pat, during a late-night doughnut burglary.

Christie told Winfrey, during an interview on her OWN network, that he knew his wife was the one because she was “different” and “spontaneous.”

He recalled Mary Pat saying: “Let’s go break into the kitchen in the dining hall at college because we smell that they are baking doughnuts for the next morning,” he told Winfrey. “So let’s sneak in and steal some of the doughnuts now.”

Christie and Winfrey shared their lifelong struggle with weight, and how they deal with the media scrutiny.

“I would love to show these people who say that because I’m overweight that means I’m not disciplined — they think you could get to where I am being undisciplined? Let me show them,” Christie said.

Christie also opened up about what he really thinks about former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney:

“I have a real sense that Governor Romney has a real depth of knowledge and experience and understanding about government and business — but he doesn’t really communicate it all that well. I think people have a hard time at times connecting with him.”

He continued: “The challenge for him is going to be, can he connect with the American people in a way that convinces them that they’ll trust him?”
