WATERBORO, S.C. — Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is climbing in the polls in South Carolina, but one audience member at a barbecue Thursday took that optimism a step farther, addressing Gingrich as “Mr. President.”

“Mr. President,” began an audience member when handed the microphone.

“Not yet,” said Gingrich, as the audience laughed. “But with your help,” he added, to shouts of applause.

But Gingrich, who is close on Romney’s heels according to the latest polls — in large part due to his debate performance Monday — was confident about his prospects, predicting that if he wins the state’s primary on Saturday he will be the GOP nominee.

“That was a genuine honest mistake, Mr. Speaker,” the man explained after, and went on to ask a question.
