TV musicals are geared towards a certain audience — and that audience is not made up of straight males.
But that won’t stop Katharine McPhee, “American Idol” runner-up and star of the new NBC series “Smash” from trying to appeal to that demographic.
In an interview with GQ, McPhee tries to trick straight males into watching her new TV show by posing in sexy lingerie and promising that she will get naked in one of the episodes.
She tells the magazine, “Okay, how about this: What if I tell your readers that in episode five I take off all my clothes?” Sold! But hold on—would it be true? “I mean…no. But can’t we just say that?”
For its part, NBC pumped out commercial after commercial for the show in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. The much-hyped series is billing itself as less “Glee” and more male-friendly.
“I can understand why guys wouldn’t be into ‘Glee’. You know, that’s a pretty heavy musical show. That show does, like, six songs in an episode. We’ll do, at most, three,” McPhee told the mag.
“Smash” premiered Monday night to generally mixed reviews.
