Just how popular is Brian Williams?

He’s super-popular, you guys! It must be true, because this press release says so:

NEW YORK, Feb. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Decades ago there were just a few names that dominated the news world. Everyone knew who Walter Conkrite, David Brinkley and Chet Huntley were. And, the odds were good it was one of those men who gave people their evening dose of national and world news. Today, that is not the case. Yes, there are still the big three anchors, but there are also the multitude of news personalities on all the various cable stations and even a radio personality who transcends many of his brethren on television. Many of these individuals can cause either a positive or negative reaction.

Looking at a list of 26 current affairs personalities, when asked which three are their favorites, almost one-quarter say ABC News’ Diane Sawyer (23%), while one in five each say CNN’s Anderson Cooper (19%) and NBC’s Brian Williams (19%)…

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,016 adults surveyed online between January 16 and 23, 2012 by Harris Interactive.

Wow. He’s as popular as Anderson Cooper? That’s pretty darn popular! Cooper’s CNN show is consistently in the top 3 in his time slot, and his syndicated talk show is beating Wendy Williams and Steve Wilkos.

It looks like Brian Williams’ similar mega-popularity is really paying off for NBC, according to The Wrap:

Brian Williams’ “Rock Center” hit a new ratings low on Wednesday night, so how long can NBC leave it on the air?

As long as it takes to gain traction, according to the network…

Still, the show’s numbers have to be troubling. Wednesday night’s episode drew a paltry 2.6 million viewers, scoring a 0.6/2 share in the crucial 18-49 demographic.

Isn’t it weird that people are telling pollsters they prefer television personalities that nobody actually watches? It just goes to show, there’s a big difference between who you think you’re supposed to like and who you’ll actually sit and watch.

“Think” “Progress” had an amusing headline for this one: RUSH LIMBAUGH: AMERICA’S LEAST FAVORITE NEWS PERSONALITY. Well, of course, children. That’s why nobody listens to him.
