Polls, primaries, and election campaigns aren’t the only thing that can predict who will win the presidency — so can award shows.
At least that is what CNN blogger Christopher Maloney’s so-called “Academy Awards/Golden Globes Rule” projects.
The theory goes: If the Golden Globe for best motion picture drama and the Oscar winner for best picture have been different films, a Democrat has won the White House the following November. When the same picture wins both awards, a Republican gets the Oval Office.
This year, the awards went to different films, with “The Descendants” winning best picture at the Globes and “The Artist” winning at the Oscars — so this clearly means that President Obama will win reelection.
The only exceptions over the past 50 years have been Gerald Ford and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Other than those two occasions, the award shows have “predicted” the next president.
When “Terms of Endearment” took home the Globe and the Oscar, Ronald Reagan won his second term. When “Braveheart” and “Sense and Sensibility” won both awards, Bill Clinton was elected in 1996.
So is this bad news for the GOP? Or is it just coincidence? We will have to wait until November to find out.
