Democratic Senator Bob Casey, who defeated Rick Santorum’s in Pennsylvania’s 2006 Senate election, told The Daily Caller that losing his Senate seat might have actually helped Santorum in his current presidential bid.

“I think that sometimes when you’re not in office in the Senate and you want to run for president, you’re able to spend more time traveling the country or campaigning, when you’re not tied down to Washington and to the work of the Senate,” Casey told TheDC at an event launching four minority-owned networks distributed by Comcast. “So, in some ways it can free you up to be a better candidate. So, I don’t know how to analyze whether or not he [Santorum] would have had a different [presidential] candidacy if he were still in the Senate. It would be kind of speculative but it’s been an interesting year.”

TheDC also asked Casey why he thinks Santorum is rising in the polls.

“They’re having a quite the competition. But part of it is, sometimes one year is good for you and one year is not so good. And I think he’s experiencing some success this year in the nomination. We’ll see what happens,” he said.

“Of course, as Democrats we try not to comment too much on the other side’s competition. We like watching the debate but, no … if there’s one thing that’s certain about this business, is that you’re never quite sure what’s going to happen next. So you have to be prepared for anything in an election year.”
