Obama’s mentor Derrick Bell wrote a short story called “The Space Traders,” and you’ll never guess what it’s about

Font Size:

It’ll be easier to show you. The story was adapted as a segment of something called Cosmic Slop, a 1994 HBO presentation described by Entertainment Weekly thusly:

An attempt at creating a sort of African-American version of The Twilight Zone, Cosmic Slop (HBO, Nov. 8, 10-11:30 p.m.) takes its title from funk musician George Clinton’s great composition of the same name. The wiggy Clinton also hosts this anthology series of supernatural tales: Think Rod Serling on acid. In “Space Traders,” an alien who looks like Ronald Reagan offers the United States trillions of dollars if he can take every black person in America back to his planet.

Sounds like a fun bit of subtle yet trenchant sociopolitical satire! Let’s take a look, shall we?

Get it, white folks? Because you’re all racists! Plus, slave-traders from space really dig Reagan or something. But mostly the racism part.

You can watch the rest here, if you find it necessary. I look forward to Soledad O’Brien’s hard-hitting report about how Bell never wrote this, and it doesn’t matter that he did.

The short story appeared in Bell’s book Faces at the Bottom of the Well: The Permanence of Racism. You can read the story here. I’d be interested in President Obama’s review.
