When Bill Maher made a big show of giving Obama a million dollars, he said, “This hurts!” He just didn’t say who.
Less than a week ago Bill Burton, head of Obama’s super PAC, said this about Maher and his fondness for referring to Sarah Palin by various vulgar terms for a woman’s reproductive organs:
“First of all, obviously, some of those things were vulgar and inappropriate and said over the course of years of a comedian’s life. It’s not language I would use or language we would use at Priorities USA,” Burton said. “But the notion that there is an equivalence between what a comedian has said over the course of his career and what the de facto leader of the Republican Party said to sexually degrade a woman who led in a political debate of our time, is crazy.”
“There’s no just similarity about what Rush Limbaugh said, lying about the argument that Ms. Fluke was making — a law student at Georgetown — and what a comedian has said in the past,” he added.
So, Maher (whose name Burton carefully avoids uttering) is a comedian and he says that kind of stuff all the time, and that’s why it’s different. And that’s also why they’re keeping his million dollars. Hey, it’s a lot of money, especially when it’s 50% of what they raised last month.
And that’s also why this is happening:
David Axelrod will not be appearing as a guest on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” despite reports last week that he was scheduled to do the show in the next few weeks.
“He’s not scheduled to go on at this time,” said Ben LaBolt, the press secretary for President Obama’s reelection campaign…
Axelrod has used the Limbaugh affair to attack Mitt Romney, slamming him for having “essentially refused to comment on what was a really egregious set of comments by Limbaugh” and saying “he’s afraid to challenge a guy who’s the de-facto head of his party.”
Oh, that old gag. Fine, then: Bill Maher is the de facto head of the Democratic Party, because we say so. And we can’t help but notice Obama is refusing to comment on what was a really egregious set of comments by Maher. Who is, as noted, the de facto head of the Democratic Party.
Apparently, Axelrod and the rest of these champion chess players are tired of writing the Republicans’ attack ads for them. This really isn’t turning out the way he and his brainy pals planned. The whole mess is entirely of their own making.
Isn’t it wonderful?
Now we know why Axelrod maintains that luxurious mustache: It cushions the blow when he steps on all those rakes.
