Ah, the Etch A Sketch. The frustratingly difficult toy that was the bane of our childhood. We could never get the damned thing to make a curved line or create anything other than two connected stick people.
We forgot about the toy decades ago, but thanks to Eric Fehrnstrom, an aide to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the Etch A Sketch is now a major topic of conversation, and bringing up repressed memories of failed landscapes to artistic youths everywhere.
Fehrnstrom caused a media firestorm Wednesday when talking about the campaign’s general election strategy on CNN: “It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch,” he said. “You can kind of shake it up and restart it all over again.”
Speak for yourself, Fehrnstrom. Even erasing it all and starting all over again never really helped us reach our artistic potential.
