A Georgia restaurant is attracting some free publicity after naming a sandwich the “Caribbean black and bleu,” parodying singer Chris Brown’s infamous assault on one-time girlfriend Rihanna. Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault charges in 2009.
The sandwich is filled with Caribbean spiced marinated ribeye, bleu cheese, sliced tomato, silver Lamborghini onions and shredded romaine lettuce.
On Hops & Chops’ Facebook page, executive chef and owner Richard Miley made clear who inspired the sandwich. He wrote, “Chris Brown won’t beat you up for eating this unless your name starts with a[n] R and ends with A.”
There have been many comments on the restaurant’s Facebook page against the promotion.
Michelle Sharkey Vaught wrote, “I keep trying to find the right words to respond to this inexcusable, irresponsible, and despicable incident and I can’t seem to find the right words other than we will NEVER eat there.”
Another commenter, Melissa Pepin, wrote, “Yikes … that’s in super poor taste. I love Chops and Hops, but this might be enough to keep me away for a bit. Wow … just wow.”
The owners of Chops and Hops responded to the negative comments with this statement:
The owners of C&H would like to make sure everyone knows that we and our staff DO NOT SUPPORT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Many of us have been affected by domestic violence in some manner and realize that this is no joke. We have been involved in fundraising for Project Safe Team 6 and we fully intend on donating proceeds (times 6 – in honor of Team 6) from the sales of the burger. C&H continues to strive for a community driven, family oriented, great food and great service environment. We will continue to be involved in our community fundraising and charities near and dear to our hearts.
Miley spoke to Yahoo! Music about his choice and said, “If they can talk about it and joke about it on late night television shows and make millions of dollars, I don’t see why I can’t.”
Hops and Chops doesn’t just have Rihanna and Chris Brown inspired sandwiches. The restaurant has also named sandwiches after Paula Deen, Snooki, Britney Spears, Pee-Wee Herman and Whitney Houston.
