Claws came out this week during nearly back-to-back speeches from President Barack Obama and Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney.

The two spoke on Tuesday and Wednesday during a meeting of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and from the sound of it, you’d think they were the only two candidates left in the race.

Obama and Romney gave the news media a taste of the talking points that could fill ads, news coverage, op-eds and talk-show airtime during the fall election season.

The president criticized Romney’s support of Wisconsin Republican Rep Paul Ryan’s budget proposal, saying the GOP is too extreme and has shifted too far to the right.

Romney, fresh from a three-contest primary sweep Tuesday, hit back saying he would end “Obamacare” and cut unnecessary spending.
