Clay Buchholz battered in long-awaited return

While the focus this morning will be on the inability of the Red Sox bullpen to close out the Detroit Tigers yesterday, the pitcher who started deserves a large share of the blame, too. The Red Sox certainly didn’t get what they wanted out of Clay Buchholz, who returned to the mound after 10 months on the sidelines and delivered one of the worst outings of his career.

Making his first start since last June 16, Buchholz appeared understandably rusty. He put the Red Sox in an immediate 4-0 hole and allowed seven runs over four innings in Detroit’s 13-12 victory.

“When this team scores 12 runs in a game,” Buchholz said, “it should be a 100 percent win.”
