Former Mississippi Gov. Haley’s Barbour said anyone already pontificating on whom Mitt Romney should choose as his running mate should just “shut up” because it’s too early.

“I think anybody who is talking about vice president and ‘Romney ought to do this and Romney ought to do that,’ oh shut up,” Barbour said at a breakfast with reporters on Thursday. “Nobody cares but ya’ll.”

Barbour — who opted against his own Republican bid for president this year — said he would tell him “not to decide until the middle of August.”

“You have more time to see what the developments are on the ground,” he explained.

He added: “I think it’s way, way too early to be able to even decide which path is the right path — much less who is the right person. And the good news is he doesn’t have to.”

Barbour summed up his thoughts with a quote from another Mississippi politician: “Never make a political decision until you have to, because then you’ve gotten the most information you’re going to get.”

He made the comments in Washington D.C. at an event organized by the group Resurgent Republic to discuss focus group results about how swing voters feel about President Obama.
