A former Alabama gubernatorial candidate has left his family in the United States because he is “obsessed” with being a sperm donor in New Zealand, his wife says.
The shocking story broke late last year that Bill Johnson, a Republican politician whose wife is a former Mrs. America contestant, had been secretly donating his sperm to women in Christchurch.
George Talbot of the Mobile Press-Register reported this weekend that Johnson has returned to New Zealand to be with the children he fathered. The paper reported that Johnson first started donating his sperm after traveling to the county in 2011 to help with earthquake recovery.
“He is obsessed with this,” his wife, Kathy Hale Johnson, told the New Zealand Herald. “He doesn’t want to stop.”
Even though Johnson has been donating his sperm to lesbian couples in New Zealand, he opposed gay marriage as a candidate for governor in 2010. The former Birmingham city councilman finished poorly in that Republican primary.
