Johnny Depp has portrayed some bizarre characters, from Edward Scissorhands to Captain Jack Sparrow.

It turns out the actor finds inspiration for his characters in some unexpected places. While promoting his latest film, “Dark Shadows,” Depp told Ellen DeGeneres how he came up with his zany version of Willy Wonka, who was originally played by Gene Wilder.

“I imagined what George Bush would be like incredibly stoned. And, thus was born my version of Willy Wonka,” he said.

DeGeneres responded, “So the next time I see that movie — which I all think we are going to watch it again now — that’s what George Bush would look like incredibly stoned.”

“I think so,” Depp replied.

“You may be right,” DeGeneres said. “You may be right.”
