A new web video released Monday by the Republican National Committee aims to highlight President Obama’s “empty promises” on the national deficit and debt.

The clip, called “Empty Promises: Debt & Deficits,” shows a series of Obama speeches in which the president “pledge[s] to cut the deficit in half by the end of my first term in office.”

Meanwhile, the deficits for each year of Obama’s presidency appear on screen, showing no sign of progress toward that goal.

In 2009, the deficit ran at $1.4 trillion, and each successive year since has yielded a $1.3 trillion deficit.

The $100 billion improvement falls far short of the president’s goal of halving the deficit by 2012.

The ad also features Obama’s 2010 “promise to go through the budget, line by line, to eliminate programs that have outlived their usefulness,” set against a recent newspaper clipping reporting the GSA’s “Las Vegas spending scandal.”

The RNC video’s Monday release follows the president’s own ad attacking Mitt Romney for his time with Bain Capital. The Obama campaign is airing the ad in swing states, including Colorado, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

That ad is the first shot in a renewed campaign effort by the president to frame his Republican opponent as a job-destroyer.
