San Francisco to rename street in honor of Nancy Pelosi

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi will receive a special recognition Monday afternoon: a San Francisco street named in her honor.

According to Mayor Edwin Lee’s calendar, he will “rename Middle Drive East in Golden Gate Park in honor of Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi & her 25 years of service in Congress.”

In advance of the 2 p.m. ceremony in San Francisco, the National Republican Congressional Committee blasted out a repudiation of Pelosi and the street, dubbing it “Monument to Me Avenue” and recalling that Pelosi lead the “Fight for the Failed Stimulus, ObamaCare and a National Energy Tax.”

In 2007, a street near Pelosi’s old home in Baltimore, Md. was named for her.

Not surprisingly, Twitter has erupted with armchair comedians thinking of slogans for the new street. Among the most widely repeated jab at the former House speaker has been a riff on her oft-repeated admonition that Congress had to pass Obamacare “so that you can find out what is in it.”

“‘We have to build the street named after me first to see where it goes.’ Nancy Pelosi,” tweeted Stephen Kruiser.

Others noted that San Franciscans might only be able to drive on the left side of the road.
