The so-called “birther” debate in Arizona is finally settled, legally at least, after election officials received verification of President Barack Obama’s citizenship from Hawaii.

Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett received letters from more than 1,000 residents requesting proof of Obama’s birth certificate. On Tuesday his office received confirmation of the document’s authenticity from Hawaii, ending a three-month feud between the states, KNXV-TV15 in Phoenix reported.

“[T]he information in the copy of the Certificate of Live Birth for the President matches the original record in their files,” said Bennett in a statement Wednesday.

Hawaii had initially requested that Bennett prove that the records were needed as part of normal business.

The debate in Arizona over Obama’s citizenship could have resulted in his name being removed from the state’s November presidential ballot.
