New test can map genetic code of fetuses, possibly leading to more abortions

New genetic testing using a blood sample from a pregnant women and a swab of saliva from the father can predict the entire genetic code of an 18-week-old fetus, The Telegraph reports.

Scientists believe this could lead to screenings for over 3,500 genetic disorders. The test is able to spot any genetic mutations that may have occurred.

Over time, the test will likely be refined, become less expensive, and increasingly become available to pregnant women.

Unsurprisingly, pro-life groups are worried that this new screening test could be used as the basis for more abortions. Currently, fetuses are screened for only a few genetic disorders, including Down’s syndrome.
