Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter seems conflicted about soda.
Nutter addressed the National Soda Summit in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, and told attendees that many people are overweight because they drink too much soda.
“Soda, fruit drinks and sweetened teas are the single largest sources of sugar in the American diet,” Nutter said. He then hailed New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal to ban the sale of sugary drinks over 16 ounces as “worth evaluating.”
Ironically enough, on Wednesday Nutter proudly cut the ribbon at Philadelphia’s first Shake Shack, a fast food restaurant that has gained cult status for its burgers, fries and frozen custards, The Washington Examiner reports. Bloomberg himself has sanctioned unhealthy eating. Last week his city administration recognized “National Doughnut Day” and on July 4 the anti-obesity crusader will preside over the binge-eating of hotdogs at the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.
