Ohio Repubican Sen. Rob Portman spoke on Thursday at the Faith and Freedom Conference in Washington, D.C., where he said that President Barack Obama is out of touch and “needs to get out more.”

“We are experiencing the weakest economic recovery since the Great Depression,” said Portman. “The president gave us a glimpse into the failed philosophy that he has chosen last week when he proclaimed that ‘the private sector was doing just fine.’ He needs to get out more.”

Portman, formerly the director of the Office of Management and Budget, said, “I will tell you, what concerned me even more was the context in which he made that statement. It wasn’t just that the private sector was doing fine at a time when we’ve got over 20 million Americans either out of work or unemployed. It was that he said the answer is… more government.” (VP TRYOUTS: Boring Portman, exciting Rubio give back-to-back speeches)

“I don’t think most people in Ohio and around the country agree,” he added. “I don’t think most economists agree with that.”
