Joe Williams, the Politico White House correspondent who recently lost his job for making racial and otherwise derogatory comments about conservatives on MSNBC and Twitter, is also dealing with some legal trouble after pleading guilty to a domestic violence charge this year.

FishbowlDC reported Wednesday that Williams is serving six months probation after entering the plea to second-degree assault on his ex-wife, author Amy Alexander.

The media website obtained court documents from Silver Spring, Md. showing that Williams entered a guilty plea on May 24. His punishment included a $200 fine and six months of probation.

Alexander declined to comment on her ex-husband when reached by The Daily Caller on Thursday.

“I appreciate your asking but I have nothing more to add at this time,” she said.

Alexander filed for divorce from the reporter in 2007 after 12 years of marriage, according to FishbowlDC.

Williams found himself in hot water after a June 21 appearance on MSNBC when he accused Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney of being more comfortable around white people. He was subsequently suspended after a number of controversial and racially-tinged tweets from his Twitter account were revealed.

In one tweet, Williams said of his employer: “the secret sauce in the Politico shitburger” is the “overlay of blatant racism.”

Politico announced June 30 that Williams would be leaving for good.

Asked by TheDC on Thursday about Williams’ departure from the Virginia-based organization, Politico editor-in-chief John Harris also declined to comment: “I am not weighing in on this.”

TheDC has attempted to interview Williams through his attorney Shawn D. Bartley. On Thursday, Bartley said the request was under consideration. “I will contact and consult with my client,” he said.
