Clark Durant, the insurgent Republican candidate for the U.S Senate in Michigan, is scoring a big national tea party endorsement just two weeks before the state’s GOP primary.
The tea party-aligned FreedomWorks PAC of Washington D.C. is endorsing Durant on Tuesday, The Daily Caller has learned.
The endorsement comes just days after Gary Glenn — another Republican in the race who had the support of many local tea party groups — dropped out and endorsed Durant.
Durant is now squaring off as an underdog in a one-on-one match against former Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra in the Aug. 7 Republican primary.
The winner of the GOP primary will face Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow in November.
In a press release, FreedomWorks PAC said they endorsed Durant after having “in-depth discussions with the main candidates in the race, a detailed look at their records and, most importantly, gaining feedback from FreedomWorks PAC members across the state of Michigan.”
“Michigan taxpayers prefer the refreshingly bold leadership Clark Durant offers to career politicians offering the status quo,” FreedomWorks PAC Executive Director Max Pappas said.
Durant, the co-founder of the independent Cornerstone Schools, is positioning himself as an outsider, while portraying Hoekstra as a creature of Washington.
