It looks like the Leonardo DiCaprio vs. Leonardo DiCaprio box office showdown is off.
Baz Luhrmann’s retelling of “The Great Gatsby” starring DiCaprio as the titular character was originally slated for release on Christmas Day — the same day as Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” which stars the actor as a ruthless plantation owner.
Warner Bros. studios has pushed back “Gatsby” all the way until summer 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Although delaying a highly anticipated, big-budget film is often cause for concern — usually meaning that the film is not getting the critical reception the studio was hoping for — Warner Bros. swears that everything is fine.
“Based on what we’ve seen, Baz Luhrmann’s incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more,” said Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman. “It truly brings Fitzgerald’s American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exiting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.”
Audiences can still catch DiCaprio in the not-so-family-friendly flick “Django Unchained” on Christmas Day.
