Job seekers should concentrate their efforts on the IT sector in the coming years, according to a new study.

A report published on Thursday by the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation stated that 742,000 information technology jobs were created in the decade between 2001 and 2011. While employment as a whole grew 0.2 percent during that time period, employment in the IT sector grew over “125 times faster than employment as a whole.”

The report found that while computer programming jobs in the U.S. may have dropped 35 percent between 2001 and 2011 due to those jobs being sent overseas, they were generally the lower end of IT jobs. Highly skilled computer jobs, like network and computer systems administrators, and software and applications developers, both grew around 50 percent during the same time period.

“This report dispels the notion that the best days for IT jobs have passed with the bursting of the .com bubble in 2000 and the practice of off-shoring today,” the center said.
