CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One speaker at the Democratic National Convention found an easy way to get the crowd going: Take a shot at Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for his wealth.

In a speech about equal pay, Lilly Ledbetter — the Alabama woman who is the namesake of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act — accused Romney of not understanding how “women still earn just 77 cents for every dollar men make,” because Romney made a lot of money in his career.

“Maybe 23 cents doesn’t sound like a lot to someone with a Swiss bank account, Cayman Island investments and an IRA worth tens of millions of dollars,” Ledbetter said to loud applause from the delegates at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

Vice President Joe Biden was among those seen on television applauding the line.

“Gov. Romney, when we lose 23 cents every hour, every day, every paycheck, every job over our entire lives, what we lose can’t just be measured in dollars,” Ledbetter continued.
