Facebook is denying reports of a security breach after users in France and the U.S. reported that old private messages from friends were being posted to their walls.
French news outlets reported Monday that private messages between friends from as early as 2007 and as recent as 2011 were being posted to user walls.
TechCrunch reported that the problem has spread to the U.S. as well.
Facebook denied that a security breach took place, stating instead that the messages were always visible on user’ profile pages.
“A small number of users raised concerns after what they mistakenly believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline,” said a Facebook spokesperson.
“Our engineers investigated these reports and found that the messages were older wall posts that had always been visible on the users’ profile pages. Facebook is satisfied that there has been no breach of user privacy.”
Facebook is sticking to its guns that no breach occurred, as the statement was also delivered to TechCrunch earlier in the afternoon.
