Limbaugh: Obama ‘trying to enlarge the underclass,’ 1998 remarks are proof

On his Monday show, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh reacted to recently uncovered remarks reported Monday by The Daily Caller, in which then-Illinois state Sen. Barack Obama made the case for creating a “majority coalition” including welfare recipients.

According to Limbaugh, those remarks reflect President Barack Obama’s re-election strategy, which is to seek out the “redistribution crowd.”

“Romney’s job is to turn out his base,” Limbaugh said. “That’s what Obama is doing and we know what his base is. Obama’s base is welfare recipients, the redistribution crowd. He has written off white working class voters, he has written off so-called rich but successful people. He’s really going for a constituency, a majority of which we would say are underachievers and he’s using class warfare to do it. That’s who he views his base as and he’s doing everything to turn them out.”

Limbaugh said Obama’s 1998 comments were revealing, particularly considering the record number of food stamp recipients during Obama’s presidency.

“Obama and the Democrats are not focusing on the independents,” Limbaugh continued. “Obama and the Democrats are not focused on the moderates. They’re focused on getting their base out and they’re trying to expand that base by forming sympathetic, empathetic alliances with the downtrodden. There are a lot of downtrodden because Obama had made them that way via his policies. More people on food stamps than ever before, thank you Barack Obama. Is it a coincidence that in 1998 Obama talks about a majority coalition of welfare recipients and in 2012 we got a record number of Americans on food stamps while he is president? I don’t think it is a coincidence.”

Enlarging the “underclass” will strengthen the Democratic Party’s hand in coming elections, said Limbaugh.

“So he’s trying to enlarge the underclass population,” Limbaugh continued. “Now the Democrats need a permanent underclass and they need it growing. That’s why they like illegal immigration. That’s why they like amnesty. They need an ever-growing and solid underclass. And that’s who Obama is going for. That’s who he is trying to turn out.”
