You shouldn’t make a movie that offends Not All Muslims (unless it helps Obama get reelected)

Remember when riots broke out in the Middle East and our ambassador to Libya was murdered on the anniversary of 9/11, and Not All Muslims blamed it on a dumb YouTube video? Remember when the State Department and the Obama administration went right along with that assessment for weeks, until they couldn’t get away with lying about it anymore? And remember when the guy who made the dumb YouTube video was taken away for questioning in the middle of the night, and then thrown in jail in an “unrelated” parole violation? Remember all that?

Never mind.

Associated Press:

A film dramatizing the death of Osama bin Laden is set to debut next month on the National Geographic Channel, two days before the presidential election.

“Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden,” from The Weinstein Co. and Voltage Pictures, will air Sunday, Nov. 4, the channel said Thursday. President Barack Obama faces Republican challenger Mitt Romney at the polls two days later.

Weinstein co-chairman Harvey Weinstein is a prominent fundraiser for Obama’s re-election campaign, which has touted bin Laden’s death as an example of the president’s leadership.

One of the favorite chants outside our embassies in the Middle East these days is “Obama, Obama, we are all Osama.” Just a week before the 9/11/12 attacks, the Democrats spent their whole convention indulging in fits of jingoistic ecstasy whenever anybody mentioned how Obama killed Bin Laden. (Sometimes they even remembered to mention the Navy Seals.) And yet, we’ve just spent the better part of a month debating whether you should be able to make a movie that offends someone’s religion, assuming that religion is Islam.

This is different, of course, because shut up.

Not that I wouldn’t like to see Harvey Weinstein being frogmarched into a squad car, mind you…
