The Oregon Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Boy Scouts of America must release 14,500 pages of confidential files detailing sexual abuse allegations from 1959 to 1985. The damning files detail nationwide efforts made by the organization to cover up complaints of sexual misconduct by scoutmasters.

Most instances of the abuse were never reported to the police and the abusers faced no substantial punishment. The files also show a disturbing propensity for abusers to carefully choose and “groom” their victims, reports the Los Angeles Times. The Thursday file release was the result of a 2010 Oregon lawsuit, in which an abuse victim was awarded $18.5 million from the Boy Scouts.
