On Dennis Miller’s Wednesday radio show, Miller and his guest, Ann Coulter, offered their assessments of MSNBC host Chris Matthews’ latest round of antics, including his unexpectedly critical review of President Barack Obama’s first debate performance.
Miller suggested that Matthews’ ego played a role in his breathless coverage.
“I can’t believe that Chris Matthews is such an egocentric character, that he couldn’t see that he literally became the town crier on the death knell of Barack Obama’s presidency, when he came out that night and so needs to be the center of it — he put the long knife in like nobody since Brutus,” Miller said. “It was unbelievable.”
The “Hardball” host gave high marks to Obama’s final two debate performances, however.
“Yes, but now they’re back to their usual response in moments of stress — or at least Chris Matthews is,” Coulter, author of “Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama,” replied.
Matthews assailed a Romney supporter at Monday night’s debate and insisted the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. embassy in Libya was the result of an anti-Islam YouTube video, a claim even the White House has recanted.
“The liberals need to have a mob cheering them and turning random conservatives into this week’s Emanuel Goldstein,” Coulter said of the incident. “That was truly amazing, and when exposed in the light of day, it’s Matthews who looks like the buffoon.”
Miller added that something has happened to Matthews over the years, pointing to Matthews’ bizarre claim that he would be a “star” of the Democratic Party had he been elected to the U.S. Senate.
“It is ugly,” Miller said. “For those of you who didn’t see it, he is walking almost a rope line. I think Matthews thinks he is a Kennedy or something. But, he really does when he says stuff like, ‘I’d be a star of the Democratic Party.’ It’s so sad. I don’t quite know what to say. I had dinner with Chris once in my life. He was a genial bloke. It was many years ago. But somewhere along the way, God he — I’m calling him ‘Crispus’ Matthews, since everything is about race, going back to the original black-American who was shot at the Boston Massacre, Crispus Attucks. He’s gone around the bend. Let’s put it that way.”
